Piece by Piece

Did you see Kelly Clarkson sing on “American Idol” last week? It was pretty friggin’ epic, let me tell you….Wowza. I haven’t watched this program in a few years, but decided to watch it with the kid since it’s the final season – I’m really glad we did. The talent competing has been incredible, they’ve done some really cool things (like the duets episode of a couple weeks ago), and they brought Kelly back to sing “Piece by Piece”….it’s a game changer, friends. I’ll just put it here for you to watch:

And all I remember is your back
Walking towards the airport leaving us all in your past
I traveled 1500 miles to see you
Begged you to want me
But you didn’t want to

But piece by piece you collected me
Up off the ground but you abandoned things
And piece by piece you filled the holes that you burned in me
At six years old and no
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece
He restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father could stay

And all of your words fall flat
I made something of myself and now you wanna come back
But your love isn’t free
It has to be earned
Back then I didn’t have anything you needed
So I was worthless

But piece by piece you collected me
Up off the ground but you abandoned things
And piece by piece you filled the holes that you burned in me
At six years old and no
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece
He restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father could stay

Piece by piece…

Piece by piece I fell far from the tree
I would never leave her like you left me
She will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I’m gonna put her first
He’ll never walk away
He’ll never break her heart
He’ll take care of things
He’ll love her
Piece by piece
He restored my faith
That a man can be kind
And a father should be great

Piece by piece…

Isn’t that just something?

According to Refinery 29the song was inspired by her husband’s constant love for their 20-month-old daughter, River Rose — compared with the lack of attention and care Clarkson received from her own father.

“Watching my husband love on his daughter all the time, you know, go to her events and just be there and, like, be present is, like, hard to watch but beautiful to watch,” the singer told Ryan Seacrest during a radio interview. “I know that my kids are going to have that.”

What’s so sad is that Clarkson didn’t have that herself. “I don’t even think I understood the gravity of [my relationship with my father] until I was pregnant [with River Rose],” she went on. “I was like, ‘I cannot imagine not seeing this kid to his or her full potential and just seeing what she’s going to do, what she’s going to be like.'”

But despite how painful it can be to perform the song, Clarkson also said that she’s done carrying around anger toward her father about the past.

How do we do that, folks? How do we move past our anger towards people from our past and just get the hell over it? I wish I knew….for.realz. I like to pride myself on not holding grudges – and, for the most part, I don’t – but there are a few that I’m not sure I will ever get over, which is ridiculous. I am not hurting anyone but myself – and after the life I’ve led, I don’t need any more hurt!!!

Anyway – give Kelly a listen, and marvel at her incredible talent. As well, if you have people in your life that love you unconditionally and have done much to restore your faith in love and humanity, then run and give them a hug. They deserve it. 🙂
