In the last couple of years, I’ve been on somewhat of a quest to indulge the ridiculous whims and fancies that I’ve always wanted to try…silly little things like painting a wall in my bedroom bright pink (and getting matching pink Tommy Hilfiger sheets for my bed), hanging a beaded chandelier in one corner of my bedroom because it makes me happy, piercing my tragus (the flappy bit in the middle of the ear) and wearing a brightly-colored horseshoe in it with little round balls on either end… nothing earth shattering, just things I’ve always wanted to do that are just for ME. I continued this trend this week when I installed this:

Yes, that’s a disco ball hanging from my ceiling…and yes, I know, it’s one of the most fabulous things I’ve ever seen, too. šŸ™‚ I’m sure that me putting a disco ball in my ceiling is kind of silly, but who gives a shit??! It’s fun, it makes me smile, and it’s just awesome….and what better reason to do anything than that?? šŸ™‚ I was telling a friend that I had installed this thing (can I get a whoop whoop for the fact that I got up a ladder and installed this myself??? Whoop whoop!!), and we decided that something this fantastic needs its own soundtrack, so I’m currently accepting submissions. So far we have ‘Afternoon Delight’, anything and everything by Marvin Gaye, ‘Rock With You’, the whole “Saturday Night Fever”soundtrack, and ‘Hot Stuff’. ‘Cause I’m classy like that. šŸ™‚

What things have you got on your ridiculous list? Perhaps ‘ridiculous’ is the wrong word – I mean what sorts of things do you have in mind that you’d like to do that are fun and special just for you? I’ve got plenty more on mine: an Eiffel Tower tattoo, another tattoo of the Latin phrase satis sum which means ‘I am enough’, more painting classes, sticking a ficus tree in my room, and my burning desire to wallpaper a wall in my kitchen with this wallpaper:

I don’t want to do the whole room…that would be a bit much, even for me – but wouldn’t one wall look kind of awesome? šŸ™‚

The theme here is finding joy, doing things with the sole purpose of making yourself happy. I love few things like I love stories of retirees who take up crazy cool hobbies and activities when they retire because they finally have the time – but who says we need to wait until we retire? Screw that noise, friends!! Can’t we all agree to start indulging these passions now, finding time to embrace the things that fill us full of happy NOW? Our tomorrows are never guaranteed – so how about we work harder at making the best of our todays? šŸ™‚

Starts now. šŸ™‚

PS: I think I’m going to go ahead with the wallpaper – who’s in for a hanging party? šŸ™‚
