Vacation

I have been busier than a one-legged man in an arse-kicking contest lately, and I sure needed a break. I decided to plan a mini getaway with the Wee One – but where to go??! I didn’t fancy driving any great distance, and flying was far too much of a hassle, so I decided to get a room at a hotel along the Riverwalk here in San Antonio, so we could have a stay-cation! πŸ™‚ Fun!! πŸ™‚

I came down alone on Friday night and checked in – imagine my surprise when I entered the lobby to find it overrun with teenagers (and a few adults, too!) in the absolute weirdest costumes! Turns out that the hotel was hosting an animΓ© convention – and, from the looks of it, I was going to see some crazy sights this weekend. I had some work stuff to deal with first, but then I went for a walk along the Riverwalk…it was gorgeous! Here’s what I saw:

Isn’t it beautiful? Too often, when you live somewhere, you stick to your neighborhood and don’t visit the ‘tourist-y’ places unless you have out-of-town guests – but sometimes it’s really great to go and see the pretty stuff that your city has to offer, and be reminded of why you came there in the first place! πŸ™‚

Around 4:00am early Saturday morning, the heavens opened and the rain came – and oh Lordy, did it rain! Yikes!!!! Many streets were closed down, there was flash-flooding everywhere, and it was bloody bonkers! I sat outside (out of the rain, of course) and watched it pour – it was remarkably peaceful, and I was so happy sitting there, I could have stayed all day. πŸ™‚ I tried to take pictures to capture the sight of the rain pouring off the eaves like a giant waterfall, and the normally-calm river raging like rapids (I damn near could have surfed on it, no joke), but the camera didn’t really do it justice – here’s some of what I saw:

The amount of water around was crazy! The Irish pub that I had visited on Friday was flooded (as were a lot of places), and goodness was it humid! Mother Nature does some crazy things sometimes!

While all of the plans for Saturday had to change because of the weather, the Wee One and I stayed pretty close to home at our hotel. We stayed at the El Tropicana Riverwalk – it’s quite cool! Here are a few pictures of our digs:

It’s quite pretty here, and I would absolutely recommend it if you’re staying in San Antonio. The staff are fantastic – especially those that work at Mango’s Restaurant during breakfast. πŸ™‚ During the evenings, the poolside bar is open, the pool area is lit up with cool lighting, and everyone is either beside the pool or sitting at all of the patio tables outside of their rooms. It’s fun! πŸ™‚ We’ve loved staying here – hopefully we will do it again. πŸ™‚

Remember I mentioned that there was an AnimΓ© Convention going on here at the hotel? It’s been pretty crazy checking out the get-ups making their way around the hotel…but all of the participants have been SO friendly, and it’s been great fun chatting with them in the lobby and elevator. I saw the strangest sight on Saturday morning during breakfast, though…I believe that I had the equivalent of a Bigfoot sighting. I saw Bronies. Two of them. I thought they were an urban myth….but, no – they are real. I saw them with my own two eyes. The first sighting took place at breakfast, and then they disappeared just as quickly as they had arrived, leaving me to fear that I had imagined them, or willed them into being somehow. Thankfully, they appeared in the lobby again on Sunday morning – this time, they were not only wearing their My Little Pony t-shirts, but they were carrying a stuffed toy My Little Pony on a leash. ‘Cause that’s not weird at all. I desperately wanted to ask to take their picture, but felt that it might be kind of rude (although, having said that, they were the ones rocking the Rainbow Dash shirts, so…surely they should expect it!) – so I tried taking sneaky pics! Here’s what I managed to get:

I’m not entirely sure why this struck me as so weird (ah, who the hell am I kidding? I can give you about 52 reasons why this seems odd to me) – but it did. I didn’t speak with these two, but I certainly chatted with a lot of other convention participants, and everyone was so friendly and fun – just goes to show that you can’t judge a book by the unusual shit that they are wearing as a cover! πŸ˜‰

This weekend has been so nice, and the very best part has been spending time with my Muppet. With all that’s been going on at work and her dance schedule and life and everything else that we have in our lives, finding time to just be together can be hard – but it’s SO important. πŸ™‚ Take a look at this:

Priceless. πŸ™‚

Happy Memorial Day, friends! πŸ™‚

PS: I’ve shared a few stories of the weather troubles that hit San Antonio this weekend – it was seriously awful. 😦
